COMPUTER CHECKLIST #4

Supplemental Computer Program Aids

What keystrokes are necessary to enter "source notes" for events in your program? Since we won't be using this format for entering notes, it is not necessary to study this information too thoroughly.

Also, the process described here is specifically the PAF program. It will apply to both the individual edit screen and the marriage edit screen. Once you are in the edit screen (individual or marriage), you will notice a column along the right hand side of the edit screen with a small "s" placed at selected intervals. Each will bring up a screen where sources can be stored for later reference.

Reference will be made to the "Root Position." As you view a pedigree chart, the person in the farthest left position is in Root Position. For this lesson the person appearing in the left-hand box should be you.

Let's try one and see what it looks like and how it is used to help you document the research you are doing.

There are several ways to get to the individual edit screen to begin entering that information

You can:

  • click the Edit Individual icon
  • hold down the Control key and strike the letter "I"
  • go to Edit on the Menu bar and click the Individual
  • double-click your name on the pedigree chart

Let's start with some information about Thomas Goodfellow's birth. Go to the small "s" on the line with birth place.

The letters in that far right calumn indicate where you can add source notes. When you click the letter, it is highlighted.

Click it a second time to bring up the list of sources for the individual named in the edit screen. (If you like, you can double-click the letter and get to the source screen faster.)

There are no sources yet for this individual so click New to enter the first source.

WARNING: When you create a GEDCOM file, ask yourself this question, "Is there confidential information in my NOTES that should not be passed on?" If your answer yes, then you will have to be sure and remove the check mark on the GEDCOM export screen that indicates to include the "Confidential notes and events." If you don't remove this check mark the confidential information will be exported with the GEDCOM file.
