PAF Preferences Folders Tab

The extended families that you are creating in PAF are files of data, and data files need a place to reside. You can let the PAF program decide where to put them or you can control their location. If you like working with the files on your computer, you can define the locations on the first file under "PAF files", then you will know where to look each time you need a file type.

There is a "Browse" button so you can click the button to the right of the file type you want to set, and work your way to the drive and folder where the file will be maintained.

Please NOTE that nothing on this page needs to be completed. The program can take care of itself. This is only if you wish to identify the locations, yourself and that is highly recommended so you don't return one day and wonder if your data has been destroyed when it is likely in a locality you may not have set yourself.

PAF Files

Place in this box the path name of where the PAF program can find the data files for the family on which you want to work. You could also tell it to find a thumbdrive. For example:

c:\mydocuments\genealogy\KCliffordFamily\database

OR if you let the program do it, it might just put it in a file as follows:

c:\paf5\data\ [the problem with this is if your hard drive crashes and some helpful person in a computer store tries to help you and that person only restores files under "My Documents" then you could lose any data stored under the program files.]

One very nice help in this program is when you enter a new imported file, PAF will ask you if you want to create the directory.

If you want to set the PAF program to always open to view files on the C drive you can click on Tools, then Preferences as shown above. Here click on the tab FOLDERS and if you want your PAF files on C drive, your Backups on C drive, and your reports on C Drive, just type in c:\ in the proper fields. Click on OK to save your options.

Import/Export

Enter the path name where you want PAF to store or find GEDCOM files you create or receive.

Example:

c:\mydocuments\genealogy\GEDCOMs\

Backup

This is where you indicate where the PAF program should find the backup file when it is created. We STRONGLY suggest that you BACKUP EVERYTHING—OFTEN. If you put backups on a thumb drive, the entry would probably be:

E:\

Reports

Type the path of the folder where you want to store reports that you save as files rather than print. It can be to a diskette, a flash drive, or to the hard drive. A proper path name would look like:

c:\mydocuments\genealogy\KCliffordFamily\fgr.rtf
or
A:\
or
E:\ [or whatever drive is indicated as your flash or thumb drive]KCliffordFamily\fgr.rtf

Web Pages

Type the location on your hard drive of the original files on your web page. It might be:

c:\mydocuments\sites\CliffordFamilyWebsite\fgr.pdf
