LOCALITY

You can look up any locality in the world to see what films, fiche, books, or maps are available for that area. Basically you will want to obtain information from the most specific to the least specific locality by first starting with a town or city, then a county, state, region, and country. In this manner, you will not overlook a potential source of information on your family. Within each level (city, county, state, or country), records are broken down further by categories.

As you come to the opening screen of the Internet FamilySearch screen there are three options in the center of the screen which allow you to select:

  • Search for Ancestors
  • Share information
  • Or Select the FHLC

Click on the FHLC.

At the Family History Library Catalog front page you may elect to do a place, surname, title, film/fiche, author, subject, or call number search. If you select a place, type out the word fully as it does not recognize abbreviations. You will be given options to choose from that apply to your locality. For example, typing in Portland, could refer to Portland, Oregon or Portland, Maine. Click on the link you are looking for. You will be given the record categories under that locality. As you click on the record categories, the various books, film or fiche (lists the contents of a particular roll of film or slide of fiche), or other media will be produced along with their call number and locality in the library if you desire that to be given to you.
