British Navy Records

Mr. Paul A. Blake works at TNA in Great Britain. He gave a presentation at the 2006 FGS Conference on the Records of the Royal Navy. Excerpts from his presentation are below:

The Royal Navy, with it’s long tradition of service, expertise and innovation, and its heroes such as Nelson and Collingwood, has a reputation second to none throughout the world. But it was the tens of thousands of ordinary men that mainly made up this fighting force over the many centuries. Most officers stated as boys or ordinary seamen, having ‘learned the ropes’ progressed to be Captains or Commanders. The surviving records can be excellent and consequently, so is the detail that can be discovered about an individual’s career.
