HOW TO CITE PERIODICAL SOURCES

When you cite a periodical in your genealogy computer program, include the:
  • Title of the article,
  • The title of the periodical,
  • The volume, number, and year of the periodical,
  • The page number and
  • Where you obtained the periodical (if possible).

Then data enter excerpts from that part of the article which proves or provides clues to your family history question.

In order to practice how to cite documentation located in periodicals, attempt to write out how the following information would be entered in the notes of your genealogy computer program.

"A burial record for Mary James, wife of Tom James, who died in 1804. The burial is located in the periodical "Ansearchin News", Volume 2, No. 4, 1982, page 25. This record is part of a Bible Record of the James Family."

The answer will be found on the next page. Did you do it properly?
