The Family History Center is an excellent source for historical maps on microfilm and microfiche. Many are part of the microfiche collection in each center and are there for you to use. Others may need to be rented on microfilm or fiche.

If you visit the main library in Salt Lake City, you will find a wonderful collection of maps. In addition, each state has its own historical and genealogical society where other maps might be located. In the text, Chapter 7's bibliography provides other sources for maps.Map of Africa

Locate and photocopy both a modern map of the county you are researching, as well as some historical maps made around the time your ancestors were living there. The Internet has hundreds of sites for locating and printing maps. You can go to ASK.com and be guided to many areas, or go to Cyndis List Map section to the maps site.

Ordnance Survey maps list and show boundaries for the townlands, towns and cities in Ireland, identify church locations, burial grounds and other physical features. The Family History Library has a good collection of these maps. They cannot be loaned to the Family History Centers. These maps can be purchased through the Ordnance Survey offices in Dublin (for the Republic of Ireland) and Belfast (for Northern Ireland). Several have been posted online.

A Manuscript Index to the Ordnance Survey Maps was compiled by the Ordnance Survey Office. A film copy of this index is available at the National Library of Ireland in Dublin. The Family History Library also has a microfilm copy. It cannot be loaned out to the Family History Centers.
