Family Group

PrintFGR

Starting Person

You can print one family group record with the person you've highlighted in the program as either a Parent or a Child. You can choose the individual by clicking Search, locating the person in the drop down list, and then double clicking on the person when found. Notice on the image above how the red arrow points from the Reports and Charts screen to the image on the PAF screen of the same name. If you leave it just as it is now without the check box marked to USE LIST, and with the button PARENT left marked, it will use the FOCUS person in gray on the screen the parent in the family group record it prints.

Notice the tab for FAMILY GROUP is selected and that in the second box down, the type of chart being printed is selected as "Single family." Once again you can print a series of charts or a blank chart.

Notice the expanded button is selected. This gives you plenty of room to write notes in the margins. The far right button that states "Condensed" is helpful if you are trying to save paper.

Since we have put all our notes in the General Notes area that is the only notes box we have selected. We also checked "Include 'Prepared by'" so every form will print our name and address on it in case we lose it. The "Parent links" option when marked will do a great job of cross-indexing your families. By "Print event boxes when blank," it will remind you to find the missing information. If any couples in your family were married twice click "Other marriages," (it means besides your direct-line) and they will all print. These are the basic options that should be selected.

PrintFGRMultiple

If you have made corrections to Family Group Records #1, #2 #3, #7, and #10, you can print all four family groups at once. Click the Use List box and the button EDIT LIST. You will be given the FGR Marriage List Box to fill out. On the screen that appears, type the MRIN of each family you want to print. Separate each MRIN with a comma, e.g. 1,2,3,7,10. Notice there were no spaces. To print a range of MRINs such as families 1 through 3, type the first MRIN, a hyphen, and the last MRIN, e.g. 1-3,7,10 (if using our previous example). See the example above.

If you look at the example below you will see the Valid Range circled. This means that there are 2446 Family Group records in this file so don't pick any numbers larger than that or they won't print.

Type of Chart

  • Single family  This is for a single chart of a single family.
  • Cascading  You can print charts for multiple generations going either up (as parents and their families) or down (as children and their families).
  • Blank form  This will be a three-page blank family group sheet in Expanded format.
    • page 1 — parents and four children
    • page 2 — six children
    • page 3 — notes
  • Expanded  This will print four children on the first page (only three if you include the 'Prepared by' information), six children on each subsequent page and pages for notes.
  • Medium  This prints six to eight children on each page.
  • Condensed  This prints eight to ten children on a page.

Below is an image of a Print Preview option for a Family Group Record. Notice the MRIN or Marriage Record ID number on the top of the page. The example is #3. Across from each couple, such as the parent couple for the husband and the parent couple for the wife is another MRIN number. Look at the first child who was also married and had a family. He also has an MRIN number. You can use this number to find anything in your Family History Archival Notebook that you will make for the class project. This is because they cross reference to each other. You just must file every family group record by the number at the top center of the page.

PrintFGRZoom

You can also zoom in on your notes by click to show the next page after the children are given. Notice all the notes in chronological order on the example below. The numbers to the right of the individual's name is the Record ID or RIN number.

PrintFGRNotes

Once again, you can view two pages at a time. There were over 18 pages of notes for this couple so just the first two are showing here.

Notes Options

Source notes  Click this box to make available the three boxes under it. You can choose the Titles only or either or both of the Actual text and / or Comments.

General notes  Click this box to print what you have put into the general notes. If you click Marked notes (!) only, you will only print the paragraphs that begin with !.

Tip:  If you have typed ~ as the first character of some notes to keep them confidential, click Confidential notes (~) and events in the Other Options box to prevent them from being printed on the family group record.

Parents only  Click this box to print dates and places—and notes—for only the parents, and not the children.

Notes on 1st page  Click this box if you want the sources to begin immediately after the last child and not start on a separate page

Other Options

  • Include 'Prepared by'  That's from the Preferences. If you need to change the address you want to have printed on the form, close the print box, click on TOOLS at the top of the program, and select PREFERENCES from that list. Save what you have selected and return to the print box.
  • Include photos  This is if you wish to include a photo by each individual. This sets aside space by each person, whether there is a photo or not. Click Photos to prepare the layout.
  • Include "other" events  If you have added other events (such as Military Service, Probate, Education, etc.)—they are created while in Edit Individual (Options)—they can be included if you click here.
  • Display relaitonship indicators  These are codes which describe every individual's relationship with the Root Person, if established in preferences.
  • Print event boxes when blank  This is to create an empty event box if you don't have information. It's a double-check for you so that you realize that there is marriage or blessing (etc.) information that you have not yet found—or at least entered into the computer.
  • Confidential notes (~) and events  If you click this, the general notes you began with ~ and the source notes which you marked Confidential WILL BE PRINTED.
  • Other marriages  If this is clicked, information about other marriages (than that shown in the family group record being printed) will be included in the notes.
  • Suppress RIN/MRINs  This is set in preferences.
  • Multiple parent indicators  This will produce a + by each individual linked to multiple parents.
  • Mark direct line  If you click this, each direct-line ancestor will be marked with an "x."
