%> Welcome to Monterey Peninsula College at Genealogy Research Associates

If you have no idea what county or state your ancestor was born or married in, search the vital records of North America on the Vital Records CDs. There are several Vital Records Index CDs for various parts of the world including North America, the British Isles, Australia, Scandinavia, and Germany. Each index includes several million births, christenings, and marriages taken from a partial collection of records in various places and time periods (usually prior to 1900). Each contain from four to five million names.

They are fully searchable, easy to use, extremely inexpensive (usually cost about $1 per CD), and they contain the sources used. They can be ordered and paid for at www.familysearch.org, and this web site also indicates from which localities of the world most of the records were derived.

If you are trying to obtain a list of records available for a particular location, use the Family History Library Catalog which was explained in the previous lesson. Besides helping you to locate records from all areas of the world, it will permit you to search the database by surname.
