Once you return to the Family History Library Catalog, select once again the place search.
You will be taken to a screen which will say:
Searching for matching places:
Place
Part of (optional)
If you know there are many places by the name you have in mind, such as Smithfield, then enter the state in the "Part of" box. This will limit the search to a specific state or country.
