Immigrant Overview Chart

Family Immigrants looking hopefulStudy the Immigrant Sources Chart provided in this week’s chapter reading assignment. The first number indicates the likelihood of the immigrant being found in the record. The second number is the likelihood that, if the immigrant is in the record, the record will give the town of origin. Zero is no likelihood, and 10 is positively the best source for the information.

Now study the sample Immigrant Overview Chart one researcher put together in the Chapter 4 reading. You may find that if you study your entire pedigree chart, you may also have several ancestors who could fit into all the various time periods discussed in this lesson.

During the week, post in the designated discussion area under Lesson 4 an ancestor who lived in any of the specified time periods. There is a separate threaded discussion on each time period. Please click on the proper time period and then on the button “Reply” to keep all the communication together for each time period. Give the class the complete name of the ancestor you are seeking. Remember, we are referring to the year of immigration, not the year of birth or death. You may select one or two groups that match your ancestor(s) time periods. Provide suggestions or comments in the weeks to come for that time period. Please notice that the discussion areas are broken down into these four time periods. As you return to the discussion area day by day, be sure to go into the proper time period to ask questions, post comments, or give examples.

In this manner, you will not only learn about your own ancestor, but you will benefit by the research of others in your group. After focusing on your group awhile, spread out to one of the other groups and see how they are progressing.

Our next lesson begins the discussion of useful sources for Twentieth Century Immigration (those from 1890 to the present time), specifically home sources and vital records. So, review your family records for any recent immigrants you may be searching. There's more in those records than you think!
