Applying these tactics may now include research in the following
records:
1. Family histories
2. Genealogical compendia
3. Genealogical bibliographies and indexes
4. Periodicals
While the compiled genealogical literature of your immigrant's
home country may not be as extensive as similar publications in
North America, it is still significant. The interest in genealogy
continues to grow in those countries, as it does throughout the
world. More and more sources are appearing on-line, and a surprising
amount of information is hidden in the published literature. It
is often indexed, and is certainly easier to use than most of the
manuscript sources we discuss in other lessons. It is certainly
worth researching.
To find the type of indexes or major periodical resources mentioned
above in the Family History Library collection, obtain a copy of
the Family History Library's "Research Outline," and other
instructional sources for the country of interest. These research
outlines are available on-line at www.FamilySearch.org.
Click on the SEARCH tab, then the words “Research Helps,”
below the tab. Then either scroll down to the country of interest
(like Germany) or click on the first letter of the alphabet for
that country and look for the words “Research Outline.”
Once in the “G” countries, I search for the words by
clicking on the word “Edit” on the top tool bar of the
Internet Explorer screen. Select the last option “Find (on
This Page) and type in “Research Outline.” Then either
study or print out the pages you want.
