At most public libraries, especially in larger cities, and in some colleges and universities where genealogy courses are taught, students can access Proquest Historical Newspapers online by using their library card. Open this link to read more about the information available at Proquest Historical Newspapers. Perhaps one of the major newspapers listed might apply to your family.

Every public, college or university library could subscribe to different newspaper options. Two that are part of the historical newpaper collections can be seen at these links:

The Boston Globe

The Los Angeles Times

The Heritage Quest

Another place you should search is www.USGenWeb.com by looking under the state and county you are seeking. Several newspapers are being abstracted by others.

Also search www.google.com by the name of the newspaper to see if someone in the local area has posted finding aids or indexes to the collections.

This week’s chapter is full of other ideas for finding your ancestor in the news so I won’t repeat those items here. Have fun and don't forget to document your source!
