Printed Lists

Your computer genealogy program can generate many kinds of lists, but since each program offers a slightly different variety, it's important for you to explore what lists are available to you.

The best way to find out what each list offers is to print them out, using your own family file. In addition, many of these lists offer the same customizing options available with Pedigree Charts and Family Group Records. Following is a sample of the kinds of lists you may find on your computer genealogy program.

Alphabetical, or Name Sorted List. This is an alphabetical list of all individuals in a data file. It includes each individual's RIN, birth and/or christening date(s), death and/or burial date(s), parents' MRIN, and the spouse's (or father's) name.

Place Sorted List. This schedule lists all place names included in the data file, alphabetically, by location. Place Sorted Lists can help you check for inconsistencies in place-name formatting (e.g. Los Angeles, L.A., LA., etc.). (Many programs handle formatting automatically.)

It also provides a key to the locations of vital events for all individuals in the data file. It is not available on all programs.

Source List. This permits you to print all of the sources you have cited in your data file.

ID Sorted List. If your computer genealogy program provides identification numbers, you can list all records in your data file with their ID numbers.

Possible Record Problems lists can be very helpful, pointing out possible conflicts within your records, such as a death date that occurs before the birth date or a child's birth date which comes before the mother's birth date. You should check this feature periodically, as you add new records to your file.
