NAVIGATING THE SOFTWARE

Use the Tab key to move from field to field down the page (unless you have set your preferences to allow the Enter key to be treated as a Tab key).

In this pretend situation, how did you enter information?  Ask yourself these questions:

Did I enter the date correctly, e.g. 1946 instead of 46?

Did I enter the location correctly, i.e. city, county, state?

If you know the hospital where you were born, put that information into Notes. You want to maintain the consistency of three fields for locations, not four fields which is what would happen if you put the hospital before the city. This also would not allow you enough space on your pedigree chart for all the locations you need to continue your research.

What is necessary to "save" the information you just entered on an individual? In other words, how does PAF save information on an individual? It is saved when you click on the SAVE button in the upper right hand corner of your screen.

You can also save changes by holding down the ALT key on your keyboard, and then selecting the letter that is underlined in the various icon fields. To save changes, you would use ALT + the letter S.

The way PAF saves changes depends on how you exit the screen you are working on. Every screen that contains information to save is an "edit" screen. The pedigree chart, for example, doesn't have any way to be saved—it is only showing you what has already been saved.

There are two principal ways to exit an edit screen (such as the Add New Individual screen:

Save — Clicking this button will save your changes then exit the screen, taking you back to where you entered the edit screen.

Cancel — Clicking this button will offer you the opportunity to save the changes with the question, "Do you want to save these changes?" You then answer Yes or No, depending upon what you wish to do. Just remember that if you answer No, the changes will be lost.
