Census records between 1850 and 1870 are often found on microfilm. Many of them are ordered from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and read at Family History Centers.
Here is how these films would be recorded:
Census, Federal, 1850-1870 - FHL copy
1870 CENSUS: VA, Henry County, John Bassett household, 1870 U.S. census, Henry County, Virginia, population schedule, Martinsville township, Martinsville post office, page 103, line 14, 15 Aug 1870, microfilm no. 553155, Family History Library [FHL], Salt Lake City, Utah.

As you may have noticed, we still have the year and event, the state and the county, but this time we have mentioned which household we are discussing, then the complete title of the census, whether it is a population, slave, or farm schedule, and its complete location. This is using the format as outlined in the book Evidence by Elizabeth Shown Mills.
After that the page number, line number, actual date the census was given, the film number, the repository of the film, and the repository address is provided.
If you looked at this film at a local Family History Center in which this film was part of their collection, there might be another number after this, such as
FHC #F-VA-21.
